Destin, FL (November 2, 2008)… America’s favorite artist, Norman Rockwell, branded the American Christmas tradition with his nostalgic art gracing the covers of The Saturday Evening Post magazines for over a half century from the 1920’s to the l960’s. Destin Commons has transformed its streetscape this Holiday season to display an educational, interactive “Norman Rockwell Holidays” experience. The Holiday decorations reflect a Norman Rockwell theme throughout – from the spectacular 50’ musical Christmas tree, to the Santa station, lights twinkling up and down Main Street, Holiday street lamp banners, and exciting life-size interactive multi-media Norman Rockwell vignettes throughout Destin Commons. Bringing art and culture to Destin has not been overlooked by the center. A free gallery exhibit, featuring a collection of hundreds of Norman Rockwell’s famous The Saturday Evening Post covers, will be on display throughout November and December. The exhibit will also showcase “Painting in the Commons” where children can come in, sit down at an easel with paper and crayons in hand, and create their own master piece to take home. The Norman Rockwell Gallery Exhibit, located in Destin Commons between Panera Bread and Talbots, will also host a five week series in which a different local artist will unveil their modern interpretation of a Norman Rockwell The Saturday Evening Post cover every Saturday from November 22 through December 20. “Rockin’ Rockwell: A 5-Week Modern Day Norman Rockwell Art Series” will showcase artists Linda Kernick, mixed media on November 22; Robyn Patterson, colored pencil on November 29; Billie Gaffrey, oil and acrylics on December 6; Michael Fagan, mixed media on December 13; and Michael Granberry, photography on December 20. The artists will be at the Gallery Exhibit with their new modern version on their respective dates from 1 – 2 p.m. The hours for the Gallery Exhibit from November 8 through December 21 are Fridays, 5 – 9 p.m.; Saturdays, Noon - 8 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Destin Commons is located at the corner of Mid Bay Bridge Road and Highway 98.
